Engage Your Visitors Immediately

By Gihan Perera [ 20/11/2007 ]
[ viewed 29 times ]

Let's face it. Most Web sites are boring.

Research about Internet users shows that if you don't capture your site visitor's attention within 8 seconds, they will leave - probably never to return.

Yep, eight seconds is all you've got. That’s the average time that an Internet user takes to make a decision about whether to continue looking at your site or - with one click of their mouse - go somewhere else.

So take a long, hard look at your Web site, and ask yourself whether it gives them something in the first eight seconds to stay there. If not, you're probably wasting almost all the time and effort you put into getting the person there in the first place (Heck, most Web sites don't even load in the first eight seconds)!

Be honest with yourself. Is your Web site really compelling enough to grab the site visitor's attention and keep them interested? If not, you'd better fix it - because Internet users are notoriously impatient.

How much money are you throwing away?

If you're still not convinced, look at how much money this is costing you:

• How much did your Web site cost you?
• How much are you spending on hosting fees and other regular maintenance?
• How much money are you spending on bringing traffic (i.e. visitors) to your site?
• Most importantly, how much money are you not making because you're losing your site visitors before they've had a chance to check out what you've got to offer?

Remember that it doesn't really matter how many people visit your Web site. Heck, you could probably figure out for yourself how to get lots of visitors (for example: spending a lot on advertising, or "tricking" people by promising something you can't deliver). But if most of those visitors just leave after seeing the first page, it won't make a difference - or at least, not a positive difference - to your bank account.

Of course, perhaps your Web site isn't only about getting new site visitors, so not all of this money is being wasted. But for most business owners, getting new customers from your Web site is important to you, so I bet that a large proportion of your marketing dollar is being wasted - simply because you're not engaging your site visitors as soon as they come to your Web site.

This is not an academic exercise. I sincerely encourage you to add up all the costs of running your Web site, because when you know how much it's costing you, it will give you a great incentive to make it better!

The magic of improving your conversion rate:

If you discovered that you're currently wasting a lot of your marketing money, take heart - because the solution is close at hand.

As I've said already, the key figure is not the number of visitors to your Web site, but the number who become customers. This is known as the conversion rate, which is simply the percentage of site visitors who become customers. If 1 in 10 site visitors buys from you (a very high conversion rate, by the way!), that's a 10% conversion rate. If it's only 1 in 50, that's 2%.

Even a small conversion rate like 2% is considered pretty good, but I bet that - if you're like most Web site owners - your conversion rate is even worse than 2%.

The good news is that if your conversion rate is low, it's relatively easy to improve it. As you can imagine, it's much easier to double a 2% conversion rate to 4% than, say, a 40% conversion rate to 80%!

And remember that - all other things being equal - doubling your conversion rate has the same effect as, and is far easier than, doubling the number of visitors to your site.

Look at the conversion rate you're currently getting. If it's less than 2%, just think about what difference it would make in your business if you could increase it to just 2%. Go ahead - do the calculation. For example, if you're currently getting a 0.5% conversion rate, then increasing it to 2% means a four-fold increase in your profits!

What does that mean to you in actual dollar figures?

The little-known secret to getting new customers to buy

There are many, many techniques for improving your conversion rate, and you'll find many of them in Make More Sales at (gihanperera.com/make-more-sales), our CD product for helping to improve your conversion rate.

There's one strategy I'd like to talk about here, and it relates specifically to the topic of this area - in other words, your Web site being boring.

In a nutshell, the strategy can be summarized as: Get them engaged right away.

Research shows that people who get involved in doing something are more likely to continue doing it. Conversely, if there's no initial involvement, it's much harder to convince them to take action later.

In his book Influence, Robert Cialdini describes this as the "commitment and consistency" principle. The hardest part of getting people to take action is getting them started, because there's a natural inertia that makes most people resistant to change.

But you can make that work for you, because it also means that once people have started on a course of action, that same resistance to change makes it more comfortable for them to keep going than to stop.
If this is the first time you've heard this, it might seem strange to you. But you'll find plenty of examples of this in real life.

A perfect example is the mail-order book club that offers you "4 books for $4" as a special starting offer. They lose money on that first sale, but they know that once you've subscribed to the service, you're likely to continue using it and they will make money on future sales.

Mobile phone contracts are another example. Telephone companies know that the monthly subscriber is a much more valuable customer than the pre-paid user (So much so, in fact, that Optus - one of Australia's big telecommunication companies - was accused of using sneaky wording to classify a large number of its pre-paid subscribers as monthly subscribers, in order to make the figures look better to the public).

So how do you engage your site visitors?

First, get rid of any "fluff" on the front page of your site. If your front page is just a big graphical animation, get rid of it. If it has any big pictures on it, get rid of them.

In fact, get rid of all pictures on your front page (There are exceptions, such as a well-designed animation to grab the site visitor's attention, or a photograph of the Web site owner to increase credibility. But most pictures on Web sites are a waste of time and bandwidth).

Second, offer them something free. That will grab their attention, because "free" is one of the 16 most attractive words in marketing (The others are "you/your", "love", "fun", "money", "save", "results", "new", "health", "easy", "proven", "safe", "guarantee", "benefit", "how to" and "now").

Third, engage the visitor in some action.

Giving them a free article of information is useful, but is passive because it doesn't engage them in taking much action. A better option is to give them a free download of a special report or e-book (like this one).

Even better, engage them in something interactive, like a survey or self-assessment questionnaire at (firststep.com.au/design/quizzes.html). This engages the site visitor's mind, because now they have to reflect, think, consider and get involved in your Web site.

Best Online Marketing Techniques

By Terri Seymour [ 18/12/2007 ]
[ viewed 15 times ]

I have been in internet marketing for over ten years and have seen marketing techniques come and go. Some are still around and some are new and innovative. Below you will find what I believe to be the best and most effective online marketing techniques.

Article Marketing - Article marketing was and is one of the most powerful online marketing methods available. Not only does it do wonders for you and your business, it is free as well!

Article marketing consists of writing helpful, informative, easy to understand articles that actually help your readers, not try to sell them something. Then you submit them to article banks, directories and ezine publishers. When your article runs in a popular ezine, it can do great things for your business. Writing articles is not as hard as you might think so give it a try. You will be delightfully surprised at how much it can affect your business.

Remember:

Don't worry about fancy words. People are looking for help, not big words.

Advertise in your resource box, not your article.

Provide real, helpful info and resources, hot hype!

Write from the heart! Let your personality shine through in your articles.

Blogging - Blogging is a newer form of online marketing that just started becoming popular in the late 90's. Blog is short for weblog and means an online publication in the form of a log or journal. Blogs can increase your customer base, your traffic and your search engine ranking, thus increasing your sales.

Blogging can be done for free through such sites as:
blogger.com
wordpress.com
and livejournal.com

Be sure and update your blog regularly; everyday would be best as people like fresh content, ideas and information.

Ezine Publishing - Ezine publishing has been around much longer than blogging and is far more effective, in my opinion. Your ezine needs to contain helpful resources and information, not just sales pitches. Develop a relationship with your readers. Let them know they can trust you and rely on you when they need your help.

Things to remember when putting together your ezine:

Keep it clean and easy to read.
Limit your advertising and be selective.
Always provide quality content and information.
Add your personality so your readers can get to know you.
Always provide contact info and be accessible.
Be consistent; send your ezine regularly as scheduled.
Be sure and proofread before sending it out.

Online Networking - Online networking, as with offline networking, is very important to your business. This is when you connect with as many people as possible to learn more and share more about your business. Many leads can come from networking. There are several ways to do this online.

Email Discussion Groups: Go to yahoogroups.com and search for appropriate groups.

Message Boards: Be sure and follow the rules for posting and offer your help as much as possible.

Social Sites: Such as MySpace.com, Ryze, Merchant Circle, etc. These can be great ways to make more contacts and get leads.

Joint Ventures - This is when you enter into an agreement with another online marketer that will benefit both sides.

Examples of joint ventures:

Ezine Ad Swaps
eBook Ad Swaps
Subscription Page Ad Swaps
Affiliate Programs
Exchange Advertising for % of Sales

and the list goes on and on. Be creative and come up with new ways you and your associates can help each other.

Podcasting - Podcasting is using digital media files which are distributed all over the internet via syndication feeds. Podcasting is still a fairly new way of online marketing and has great potential. Podcasting can be powerful because it uses voice not written words to get the message across. Offer your articles, do voice interviews, offer a chapter in your ebook via podcast, etc. Again, use your imagination to create new ways to spread the word about your business.

Ezine Advertising - Advertising your business, product, service, etc. in quality ezines can be well worth the money spent. There are a few things you can to to help you choose which ezines to advertise in.

Do a search to find ezines that cater to your target market. For example: if you are advertising kids' books, you don't want to advertise in an ezine about cars.

Once you find several targeted ezines, subscribe to them so you can look them over and see if the publisher is reliable in sending them out. You can also look over the other ads and make sure the publisher is selective in their advertising. You can possibly learn what the other readers think of the ezine as well.

Try contacting the publisher to see if they respond to your email. Ask about testimonials from other advertisers. Find out how many ads they run per issue and what the costs are.

You could also ask the publisher to do an ad swap to get an idea of what the response is like. Be selective in your choices and always code your ads so you know which ezines actually deliver.

I hope this article has given you some insight as to how to market your home/online business. I use several of these methods (and should be using the rest) and know from experience that they work!

The possibilities with the internet are endless and we need to keep up with new and innovative ways of marketing ourselves and our business. And we need to keep using tried and true methods as well.

How to make more money on ebay

By Rod Larrivee Larrivee [ 30/06/2006 ]
[ viewed 129 times ]

There are many ways you can make money on ebay, from selling stuff you no longer need, all the way up to selling merchandise from a wholesaler. This is not the limit however, of the wonderful methods of generating cash off of the world of ebay. You can sell property, cars, boats, and even businesses. There have been transactions as low as a dollar, all the way up to business transfers that run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ebay is clearly here to stay, now it is time for you to get your feet wet on this great money making opportunity.

Here we will focus on selling for a wholesaler, this is where you will promote other peoples products and sell them for a cut of the profit. Lets say for example you find a product you are interested in such as say, stereo speakers. You will then search for a wholesaler that will accept a contract with someone that deals in affiliates and ebay, with the proof that you are an ebay seller and can verify the account on ebay this should not be hard. Once you have landed this contract with the wholesaler, it is time to set up market strategies, and make sure they conform to what the wholesaler finds acceptable. Make a plan, check it twice and get to work selling.

Once you have the site available for the public to view, you need to weigh out some of the business expenses that will ensure you are not spending more than you are making. By having multiple payment options you can be sure you have all your sales basis covered. One of the biggest expenses you will encounter will be shipping and storage costs. It is not likely that you will have the space in your home to store a couple thousand pairs of home speakers, and this notion would require some sort of insurance that will be required in order for the wholesaler to relinquish the product to you. Any notion that you can rent space for cheap is improbable, and again will still require insurance as a measure of protection for you and the wholesaler. So what do you do? Well the answer is simple; you have the wholesaler keep the product, and ship when necessary to the customer when purchased.

This will keep the entire product in one place, alleviate the need to worry about shipping, and still ensure that you are able to make the sale. Once the product is sold to a customer, you simply place the order to the wholesaler, they will in turn send the product, charge you for the wholesale cost and the holding and shipping cost and the rest is yours to keep. This is not a difficult task and you do not even need to leave your seat. What you really need to do is research the product, and its competitors and finds a price that is reasonable, and will generate the best profit for what you are doing. What you are really doing is selling the goods like a salesman on a store floor. All the while not even leaving your home, you do not even really need to monitor this whole process, as the customer’s invoice will come in to you via e-mail.

Buying Tips For Maximum Profits On EBay

By David Nettey [ 27/06/2006 ]
[ viewed 134 times ]

Buying on eBay can be lots of fun and profiting. If you love bargains, and am yet to see anyone who doesn't, i stand corrected, if there is anyone one out there who doesn't, then eBay is the right place for you. 24 hours a day and the whole year through in the comfort of your own home, you can find and profit from lots of bargains.

From eBay antiques to eBay motors, real estate to sought after event tickets, consumer electronics to collectibles, there is something for everyone on eBay. And these are just a few of the categories i have mentioned. At any one time, eBay has hundreds of thousands of items for sale on its network of sites.

Items are organised into categories on eBay, and these are listed down on the left hand side of the screen. It's amazing what's on sale on eBay. Rather than moving through all this categories, it's a better idea to use eBay's search facility.

Because eBay has such a massive number of items for sale, it's very likely you will be presented with hundreds if not thousands of items when you search for items to buy on eBay. The first thing to have in mind, when you need to buy on eBay will of course be the price.

EBay is supposed to be the bargain warehouse, but over the years, there have been so many items that have exchanged hands for way above their retail value because of the bidding frenzy that comes with certain items offered for sale on the auction site.

It's always a good practice to compare bids if you are involved in an auction, and if this has already exceeded the pre - determined amount you are willing to pay, don't be tempted into a bidding war, just move on and find similar items with a different seller, you are always bound to find these because remember there are thousands of items available for sale on eBay.

Items you buy on eBay will be mailed to you unless stated otherwise, so be very wary of postage and delivery costs when determining the amount you are willing to pay for an item. When you have decided on these, also consider the condition of the item. EBay is an auction site, and as is the case with all auctions, there are always old and new items for sale. So be very careful, usually the seller's description of the item should give you an idea about its condition.

When in doubt you can always email the seller through eBay's mail system. All good sellers will answer questions regarding their items.

Some auctions come with a "Buy It Now" icon, you can end the auction immediately by paying for the advertised price using the "Buy It Now" icon. I suggest you should only do this if the "Buy It Now" price is within the pre - determined amount you are willing to pay.

The Method for Finding Deals on eBay!

By Lionel Estridge Estridge [ 04/06/2006 ]
[ viewed 160 times ]

There are steps you can take to make sure that you are getting a great deal on the items you obtain through eBay. These same steps will also help to shield you against fraud.

Start with the auction in question. Make sure that you read every word of the description and the auction details.

Pay special attention to what the description and auction details do not say. For example, is a guarantee mentioned? Is the item new? Is it authentic? Is there evidence of authenticity? Look for auctions that provide the right information, and just keep away from those that do not.

Who will pay the shipping and handling costs? Often, the buyer pays these costs, but sometimes, the seller tries to charge more than the actual shipping and handling costs are. Be careful of high shipping costs, especially for items that will be auctioned off at a very low price. Note when the item is supposed to ship after the bidding has ended.

Don't make the mistake of bidding on an item merely because it is a 'good deal.' It is only a good deal for you if the item is something that you really want or need. A lot of people simply bid for the sake of bidding - or winning - without having any real need for the item in question. Before bidding on items that you do want or need, it's best to check prices around the Internet and the prices available from offline sources as well.

Learn more about the seller. What is their rating? Read their feedback page. Not learning more about the seller can be very costly. Sometimes scammers make their auctions sound like really great deals. Be cautious of prices that seem to be extremely low.
